Do you fully understand what Burnout is?

Simply stated, Burnout is too much, for too long; so much so, that your body/mind, when using your current life strategies, is no longer able to successfully recover.

How do you know if you, a loved one, or your direct report is suffering from Burnout?

Here are 13 early warning signs. Please take them seriously. Get professional help if you cannot self manage them. Left unaddressed, Burnout can have devastating effects.

  1. Anger at those making demands.

  2. Chronic fatigue - exhaustion, tiredness, a sense of being physically run down.

  3. Self-criticism for putting up with the demands.

  4. ynicism, negativity, and irritability.

  5. A sense of being besieged.

  6. Exploding easily at seemingly inconsequential things.

  7. Frequent headaches and gastrointestinal disturbances.

  8. Weight loss or gain.

  9. Sleeplessness and depression.

  10. Shortness of breath.

  11. Suspiciousness.

  12. Feelings of helplessness.

  13. Increased degree of risk taking.

The extent of your symptoms determines your course of action.

Fight Burnout.

Sometimes a simple change at work can help you avoid

many of the early warning signs.

Coping successfully with stress is the key to avoiding Burnout. Some of the following suggestions can help.

  1. Develop a realistic picture of yourself - know what you are feeling and why.

  2. Accentuate the positive.

  3. Set realistic goals for yourself.

  4. Recognize the symptoms of stress and burnout.

  5. Ask for help when it is needed.

  6. Develop a structural and personal support system.

  7. Retain hope.

  8. Develop a detached concern for recipients of your efforts.

  9. Maintain an active personal social life outside of work.

  10. Take time-outs when you need them.

  11. Maintain a regimen of proper nutrition and physical exercise.

  12. Develop a sense of organizational involvement.

  13. Be willing to accept counseling/coaching when needed.

Of these, the most important step is to be aware of your own feelings and physical condition. You must identify the problems that exist, then seek the proper coping strategies to alleviate them and if necessary, get professional help.

Balance is the key to addressing Burnout. Balance between giving and getting, balance between stress and calm, balance between work and home.
